GREAT Britain and Wigan Warriors legend Sean O’Loughlin has been granted a testimonial year – and is to support three local charities through his efforts.
O’Loughlin, who is the club’s longest serving player, is to celebrate his testimonial year by fundraising for the Wigan Youth Zone, Emma Hoolin Appeal and Wigan Alzheimer’s Society.
The star said: “I feel very privileged and honoured to be granted a testimonial match at the DW Stadium. I’d like to thank everyone who has helped me along the way and I’m obviously hopeful for as big a turnout as possible for my testimonial match as it will bring even more support for the fantastic local charities that I am supporting. I look forward to seeing you all there.”
The testimonial match takes place on Thursday 19 January versus Huddersfield, KO 8pm. Tickets for the game, priced at £15 and £5 with concessions, went on sale on Monday (28 NOV). It is the first testimonial to take place at the DW Stadium since Kris Radlinski’s in 2002.
Local businesses are also being urged to back his testimonial year and a reception is being held in the town on December 7 for those wishing to become Testimonial Year Business Partners.
O’Loughlin has played for the Warriors for a decade, making over 250 appearances, since making his first team debut for the side in 2002. He is a product of the Warriors successful Academy and Reserve sides after joining from local Club Wigan St Pats.
Sean had the honour of lifting both the Challenge Cup in 2011 at Wembley and the Grand Final Trophy at Old Trafford in 2010 as Club Captain.
He said he had chosen his three charities to ensure the benefits of the year were shared across all age groups, adding: “I’d like businesses from across the region to help me raise money for these very worthwhile causes and to help make this a spectacular testimonial year.”
The Youth Zone’s development manager, Simon Baker, said: “It will mean a lot to the young people of Wigan to see one of their heroes backing our plans – it’s a massive boost to our ambitions and we’re extremely grateful to Sean for supporting us.”
O’Loughlin’s testimonial year is being led by a committee of supporters and a range of events are being held throughout the year.
Businesses interested in backing the testimonial year are urged to attend a reception at the Wrightington Hotel on December 7, starting at 7pm. Further information is available from Simon Baker, Development Manager for Wigan Youth Zone, on 07557 852922. Email simon.baker@wiganyouthzone.org
